Patoka Lake's Bald EagleDr. Vaughn featured in new websiteLouisville, Kentucky January 5, 2005: Dr. Sam Vaughn, DVM has been personally involved in the professional care of this most rare bird, the Bald Eagle as C-52’s personal veterinarian. Funding on going care is an issue for DNR, and thus was born a website for C-52 providing all history, contact information and donations to date. When Bald Eagle C52 needed medical attention in 1996, Dr. Sam Vaughn at Stonefield Associates was contacted. Dr. Vaughn and his staff were there for quick surgery to remove a fast growing squamous cell tumor on the bird’s right wing. In 1998, an ingrown feather follicle was attended to, and C52 was none the worse for the wear. Dr. Vaughn and his associates are highly professional, and are sensitive to both the animals they care for and the people who bring them for treatment. Dr. Vaughn’s education continues as he practices. By networking with other avian veterinarians and monitoring up-to-date research, Dr. Vaughn operates on the cutting edge of technology. C52 benefited from this technology earlier in January of this year. Using laser surgery, a tumor and small portion of C52’s right wing were removed. The bird recovered fully from that surgical procedure. Sam is genuinely interested in the Indiana DNR and in Patoka Lake’s resident eagle. He provides his services at a discounted rate. He calls quickly to report test results as needed and, on occasion, just calls to check on one of his favorite Hoosier patients. The team at Stonefield Associates also provides excellent veterinarian care for Patoka’s other resident birds of prey, a red-tailed hawk and a barred owl.
